To secure classified data from getting misused, it is
best to delete them completely after their required
usage. However, deletion the of file is not sufficient,
especially with the advent of powerful data recovery
tools that are capable of searching data deleted even
long back. Therefore, to delete files in a permanent
manner what is required in more reliable and accurate.
Complete file deletion as seen from the OS only empties
the table entry in the file system, but bits of data
remains written in the hard drive. Only when the hard
disk space is overwritten by some other data is the
previous data eliminated. So, the basic principle
behind the permanent file deletion is to overwrite them
with any random data. Software like Kernel File
Shredder is built on this very concept to delete files
and folders beyond the point of recovery. This
application makes several passes of random or
sequential bits of 0s and 1s t overwrite the data to be
deleted from the system’s hard drive. Crypto algorithms
like Depending on the sensitive nature of data,
algorithms such as US Army AR380-19 (3 passes), Peter
Gutmann (35 Passes), DoD 5220 + Peter Gutmann, and
German VSITR (7 Passes) are used for this purpose.
Kernel File Shredder removes every trace of data from
the drive which is otherwise impossible to achieve even
with disk formatting. This way, this tool can delete
files and free disk space. For more information
